“By a vote of 59-14, with 28 members absent or not voting, the House approved a proposed constitutional amendment that would eliminate affirmative action in state government.
Rep. Sally Kern, R-Oklahoma City, said minorities earn less than white people because they don’t work as hard and have less initiative.
“We have a high percentage of blacks in prison, and that’s tragic, but are they in prison just because they are black or because they don’t want to study as hard in school?” she asked. “I’ve taught school, and I saw a lot of people of color who didn’t study hard because they said the government would take care of them.”
Kern said women earn less than men because “they tend to spend more time at home with their families.”UGH, THIS BITCH.
saw this earlier…. oh oklahoma #failstatus
I loved reading everyone’s stories of their favorite Indians! I’m glad people shared and I wanted to try something else. This time a survey for all the wonderful Natives on Tumblr. And if you’re not Native, feel free to do it anyway. For instance, under Tribal affiliation you can put your “favorite tribe” or the most badass tribe *coughLakotacough*. So I guess just reblog with your information, and if you don’t feel comfortable, or feel it’s too personal than just fill out what you feel comfortable with, so you don’t have to worry about stalkers.. haha.
Name: Greg Buzzard
Age: 20
Tribe Affiliation: Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma (aka the best ever)
Where are you from? Depends on which parent you ask, lols… I was born in Missouri and went to school there but also spent a considerable amount of time in Marble City, OK. My facebook profile says Missouri though.
Occupation: Student
If you’re a student, what is your major? Native American Studies major and Chinese language and literature minor
Favorite Activity: Probs being nerdy #loser
Have you ever lived on a Reservation or Reserve? We don’t have those in Oklahoma… but I have lived in Native communities
What’s your favorite Native film? This ghetto independent Navajo film called Turquoise Rose… even if it does make Cherokee jokes
Whose your favorite famous Native? Wilma Mankiller!!
Favorite Native American Literature? Hmmm, probs Ceremony by Leslie Marmon Silko… or Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich. Or anything Sherman Alexie ever said/wrote.
Has anyone ever stereotyped you? It’s either 1. white people asking stupid questions about tipis 2. white people bitching about how I supposedly get free everything because I’m Native or 3. Indians saying how I must be white because there are no real Cherokees anymore
Do you know what it’s like to spend your whole day at an IHS clinic and if so what has been your longest wait? Ugh, probs somewhere around 6 hours… waiting for medicine is the worst.
Is your great grandmother a Cherokee Princess? Well she’s Cherokee…..
Do you live in a Tipi? Bitch I’ve never even been in one… we are not Plains people.
Are you a powwow dancer or how do you feel about powwows? I danced when I was younger, but I don’t now. It’s not a Cherokee thing, but I love buying shit at powwows.
What department of Government are Native Americans under? Dept of the Interior - BIA
Have you ever updated your facebook status using rez slang? Nope, I keep that shit classy.
Do you have a noticeable rez accent? Nope, but when I’m drunk apparently I sound much more Southern…. :/
Who makes the best frybread? ANYONE BUT NAVAJOS. I hate Navajo frybread!!!! It’s so weird and thin. But of course I’m gonna say my Granny.
What event in Native American history would you change if you could? There are lots, but I think I have to say when Oklahoma became a state. There were proposals for a separate Native American state called Sequoyah, but of course the white people said no and now we have Oklahoma…. #fail
What makes you proud to be Native American? We’re the first peoples. We were made for and bonded to the beautiful land we live on… no one else can ever have the connection to our lands that we do. And that’s the best thing, to live somewhere you know you belong.
How do you classify yourself (ie, Native American, Indian, American Indian, Your tribe, etc)? I use Native/Indian/Cherokee pretty interchangeably… I like the Canadian “First Nations” too, it’s pretty nifty.
